Example of Kaiten (conveyor belt) Sushi in Japan – Numazukou, Queens Square, Minatomirai, Yokohama

I sat at the counter where you can watch the Sushi chefs prepare the food. The conveyor belt was on but not being used. On a slow day at lunch, most people are ordering the lunch set (sushi selection on a wood plank or sushi bowl <sashimi slices served on a bed of rice>). I chose ala carte to get my favorites. The belt wasn’t being used at this time but I’ve been here at dinner time when the belt was running and you could either pick up a plate as it goes by or ask for special request if you don’t see what you want. I wanted to share this experience because I think the set up at each seat at the counter is genius and such a good way to have people served quickly. There are also versions with ipads at your seat to order and some with bullet trains to deliver it from the kitchen. Very fun.
