I know that they have actually been in business since 2008, but it was only a couple of years ago when our travel needs spurred us to consider this alternative form of lodging. Maybe it is because I have so many hotel award points, but nice hotels are our normal solution. In this case we were traveling to a wedding and our group consisted of me, my wife, my grown son, his girlfriend, and our married daughter (traveling without her husband). I won’t go into all the details, but when we considered even moderately priced hotels, by the time we accounted for three rooms for three nights, the costs added up. So we decided to explore this “new” Airbnb thing we’d heard about (at least new to us). It turned out we were able to find a very lovely 3 bedroom, 2 bath house not far from the venue that accommodated us all comfortably. And we had the bonus of a nice living area, a great kitchen, and even laundry facilities. We also had the benefit of a “real person” (the owner:host), concerned about our comfort and needs. It was a great experience and a better value than hotels. We have since stayed in Airbnb’s in Kyoto, London, Edinburgh, Saint Andrews, San Francisco and L.A.

Beyond the comfort of more space and amenities, and the value for the dollar, we have really come to appreciate the hosts that we have met. Typically, an Airbnb host takes an unusual interest in the well being of their guests. It is an extremely personal touch that you don’t normally experience at a Hotel. It seems to be working since Airbnb now offers more rooms than the top three hotel chains combined.

We will still sometimes stay in hotels when we travel (I still have a lot of points!), but more and more, we will search Airbnb accommodations for a unique, hosted experience.

Traveling with Airbnb has been such a positive experience, that we are now hosting our own space.
